Trial on Monster Planet
Desktop controls - WASD for movement J for A button K for B button
alternatively you can use the arrow keys for movement and Z for A and X for B
Right Shift is Start, though there is no pause function.
Mobile controls - the game should have a playable game boy-ish interface in mobile browsers by default
some notes:
music might be a little loud so maybe turn your device down a bit
the other moving NPCs do not hurt you, you can jump on them and hold down A as you land on them to bounce higher
you can hold b to run
i made most of my sprites and backgrounds first and then realized my folly as I went to setup the collision and platforms so as a result it's pretty janky and often times probably not clear what you can jump on or where you need to go to end a level. with the exception of the first and fourth levels, they all end once you reach a certain point in the top rightmost corner of the map. On the first level just keep going right and you're sure to hit the trigger to the next level and on the fourth you have to "jump into the cloud's mouth".
the level design is pretty rough and slapped together and I didn't quite consider how the color of the background with often obfuscate many of the player and NPC animations so things will look a little odd in places.
even more notes:
This is Trial on Monster Planet. A game made for Mini Jam 178 Monsters with a limitation of "Everything is Alive". My implementation of the limitation ended up being a little more sparse than I initially planned and much more aesthetic than mechanical.
The core idea from the onset was to build a platformer around a world where every single environment piece was a living thing to be interacted with, which morphed into this story pitch of an entire living planet sized monster that contains a bunch of other monsters living on it that sort of blend and fuse with the environment in different ways. I thought it would be interesting to have this grotesque, eldritch, body horror sort of lore going on and then juxtapose that with the idea that "actually all the monsters are very friendly and supportive of each other". So the result of that is the player controls an egg that slowly hatches throughout the course of the game and all of the monsters just want to help them get to the end. I originally wanted to have a thing where you got to choose different types of body parts at the end of each level and then at the end of the game there would be an image of your own little monster depending on your choices, but the idea proved to be a little too ambitious for me.
In the end, I really enjoyed the thought experiment of designing this one, even if the limit and theme mostly came through in just the backgrounds and characters.
I got the play around with GB Studio's built in music maker for the first time so let me know what you think of any of the tracks. I didn't remember you can make tracks longer until the one I made for the last level so they are gonna be a bit repetitive. Only ever made two tracks for a previous game I worked on with a friend and I am not at all a musician, but had a lot of fun moving things around until something sounded alright.
Hope you enjoy it, and thanks for playing!
